Kindergarten: Week 2

I think Evie is officially enjoying Kindergarten. She had a rough time in the middle of last week, but by Friday, she was fine. Yesterday and this morning, she was happy, too. I think she just got tired last week, but she'll get used to the new schedule.

Her teacher asked me last week wether Evie stayed home with me before school, and I told her that she had gone to pre-k and stayed home with me. Mrs. Hayes told me that she had all the kids writing their names on paper, and Evie came up to her and said she had written more than just her name. Mrs. Hayes assumed she meant that she had written a few more letters, but she was very surprised to see that Evie had actually written "Mama", "Daddy, "Maggie", and "Oliver". She said she had 2nd graders that couldn't even spell their siblings' names. And when I told her that Evie could read, her eyes were as big as dinner plates. Hard not to be a little proud.

Evie brought this paper home yesterday. When we asked her about it, she said it had been her idea to write "Evie's pig" on the paper, not the teacher's idea. And she knew to put the apostrophe there to show that it was her pig. Otherwise, if she just put an "s" at the end of her name, people would just think her name was spelled E-V-I-E-S. John and I had to pick our jaws up off the floor. Evie told us she learned about it from reading books and watching The Electric Company.

Oliver and Maggie are doing great while Evie's at school. Maggie spent most of last week playing pretend just the way she wanted to. She started pre-k again yesterday and had a really great time. Her favorite teacher, Mrs. Donna, is the helper in her class this year. Maggie loves Mrs. Donna (and so do I!!), so I know this will be an awesome year for her. (Being a terrible person, I forgot to take pictures of Maggie's first day!!! Ack!)
